What
does Peter Williams Paul Smart, Phil Read, Mick Grant, Dave Croxford,
Paul Dunstall all have in common? Answer; they all raced a Norton
Commando Production Racer like this one. In the early 70s 750 production
racing was big in England. Real big. And for about two years, if you
raced 750 production class, if you didn’t have a Trident, you had to
have a Norvil. After all, a Norton Production Racer was runner up at the
Isle of Man by less than two seconds in 1970, won the 1973 isle of Man F
750 race, and was runner up again in 1973… but back to the beginning.
In late 70s, a certain 20 year by the name of Dxxxx
Bxxxxxx rode his first Norton Commando in Wellington. The Norton bug had
bitten. The next year he flew to England, bought another Norton, and
biked around Europe, up through Norway to the Artic Circle, and back to
London via the Isle of Man. He rode Norton’s on and off, raced on and
off, but he always dreamt of owning a Norton F750 production racer.
Turn
the clock forward 20 years, and the same chap was once again living in
England. He decided that if he was ever going to get a Novel, then it
was about time he did so. But how to go about it… There was only one
person to ask:- Norman White of Norton factory fame. So off he went to
Thruxton to talk with Norman.
Norman is quite a character; quite intense, extremely
personable and very very knowledgeable about Nortons. And so he should
be: Norman was a Norton factory mechanic and test rider in the 70s; he
helped build and test rode each of the original 119 Norvils, he prepared
various race winning bikes, including the bike that won the 1973 Isle of
Man F 750 race helped prepare the famous John Player Norton factory
Nortons. Not only that he won the Thruxton 500 race himself on one in
1973, and still owns and races a 1973 John Player Norton today. Norman
knows Nortons. Norman went on to be chief mechanic with Honda Britain
Race Team, before returning to Nortons and Thruxton in 1982. Yes, it was
always going to be Norman.
So
our good chap meets with Norman. The plan was for Norman to prepare a
Norvil (it’s not a Norvil, it’s an NVPS he constantly reminded) as close
to an original Norvil as possible. The Norvils produced in the 70s were
picked directly off the production line, and used the standard frame,
engine and gearboxes as a basis. The engine was heavily modified
internally, and a lot of racing parts like racing tank, seat and pipes
are still made, so building one up from scratch again was quite in
order. But first of all a suitable donor bike had to be found, with its
engine and frame number within the original range.
A quick call to old friend Gxxxxx Dxxxx in
Wellington, and the ideal bike was found in Paraparaumu. This was
shipped back over to England from whence it cometh and back to Thruxton
to Normans shop. Originally there were two actual factory racing
bikes, and 119 replicas. Norman still holds the factory records and
templates for special parts, so building another one was going to be
something quite special. Norman had one remaining engine factory front
brake so that was a big plus. Quaiffe 5 speed clusters are still
available, (that’ll be 950 pounds ($3,000 NZ) and in that went
too.
What
followed was a no expenses spared ground restore and rebuild of the
Norton, to as close an original specification as possible. The motor was
tuned to original racing specifications. Frequent trips to Thruxton saw
the bike being built slowly but surely. On went the racing seat and
tanks, on went the hand built rear sets. On went new reworked forks. Out
went the speedo and tacho to be rebuilt by an old boy in Birmingham who
still rebuilds them like new. There is a lot of detail to this bike. For
example the rear brakes are vented, the kick start has been heated and
straightened as per original. In went 5,000 pounds sterling of new parts (that’s
$15,000.00 NZ). Most of the bike is new. And it shows.
And so the bike was completed, and eventually shipped back to New
Zealand when the owner returned to Wellington. Fettered by Nez (Bob) at
Classic Cycles ( of course nobody other than Nez could look after this
bike- he’s the only other Norton factory trained mechanic in New
Zealand) It’s now done two thousand miles, its in beautiful condition, it goes like a scalded cat – oh,
YES and it’s for sale.
