This
is one of the most eye pleasing scouts we have brokered. I can only
put this down to the 16" rear and 19" front wheels, and wide 32" bars giving it
a more balanced, more proportioned look. So here's a chance to finish a pretty
scout, someone's project that never quite got finished - their loss could be
your gain!.
Even with a small header leak she is a sweet runner, and guess what, you can
even hear her run right now! (see below).
Has not ridden yet in this form as seat is not anchored. Fitting of a font mount
is needed as this was cut off during it's time as a mild harley-ized custom. If
you can't make or find one it could be adapted from readily available
aftermarket Chief ones.
Both wheels are laced to stock hub hardware and brakes and tires have loads of
tread left. The front is near new, an Avon SM MkII, the rear an Avon Super Venom
130/90. There is some very minor rust on the chrome rims. Overall,
while not showroom condition she is in a good, clean, mechanical and pretty
original condition although missing a few goodies like ammeter and speedo etc.
The frame, tanks, forks, running gear, front fender, braces, headlamp, chain
guard etc are all correct and original. Engine number boss is
blank, probably a NOS case replacement at some stage. Frame number is 741 1270.
Other departures from original are fiberglass rear fender (copy), SU-8
carburetor and fixed distributor timing. Handlebars and controls are for the
British SU throttle and manual choke arrangement. It is left hand shift
and right hand throttle, no advance/retard (easily added)
NOTE: This is a stored older restoration, converted from a custom,
tidied up but NOT finished:
The low reserve reflects the following that still need attention:-
- missing - frame castings for seat yoke and dash panel, ammeter and
speedo
exhaust - kicker arm does not clear current muffler or top of chain guard.
electrical - lighting, ignition and charging needs terminating.
cosmetic -rear lower left hand tank has been blistering paint from a fuel
leak.
Has had 12volt conversion including generator but wiring has not been
re-terminated after the changeover. Most wiring is already there that you need
to connect lighting and generator. Regulator provided and ignition
switch of some sort is also provided. See list of spares
here . Already has hi/lo switch on the bars and a mint new horn
<fitted>.
According to the prev owner who had it since 1984, in the mid nineties during
its life as a mild custom, the engine was rebuilt and bored out to around 40ci (
or 650cc). Last year it had the valves and tappets serviced. Owner said its
never been registered for road use so its never seen more than a few thousand
miles. It starts second kick cold, first kick hot without fail. Idles
nicely and sounds fiery. There is very good oil return, wheel and steering head
bearings feel good and the gearbox shifts positively. With a shakedown it
should be a very ride-able mount.
